Chateau de Messey is a new star in Cruzille, a special terroir in southern Burgundy. In an isolated position surrounded by woods on a hilltop 300-400 metres high, the quality of their wines has sky-rocketed over the last few years.
Such care and attention is taken throughout the grape-growing and wine-making processes, and boy does it show! Grapes are hand-harvested and fermentation, using only ambient yeast taken from the vineyard and winery, takes place at a very low temperature and therefore lasts several months. The character of this wine is therefore deeper and far more complex than most Macon, more akin to the fresh, powerful and mineral wine style of the Côte D’Or.
On tasting you get a rounded, flowing, creamy palate, balanced by a crunchy mineral bite and a long juicy finish. Aromas and flavours of mandarin, lemon and lime with a lovely slick of limestone contribute to the quite serious quality here. The result is a fantastic wine, perfect to drink now and over the next 5-8 years.
